Η Αμερικανίδα ποπ ντίβα Μαράια Κάρεϊ βοήθησε να ξεκινήσει το... πάρτι την Παρασκευή (6/2), καθώς οι Χειμερινοί Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες Μιλάνο-Κορτίνα παρουσίασαν μια μοναδική τελετή έναρξης που συνδύασε στοιχεία από τις δύο συνδιοργανώτριες πόλεις, επιδιώκοντας να αποτυπώσει τόσο την αστική όσο και την ορεινή ζωή της Ιταλίας.
Η Κάρεϊ ερμήνευσε το ιταλικό τραγούδι της δεκαετίας του 1950 «Nel blu, dipinto di blu» («Στο γαλάζιο, βαμμένο στο γαλάζιο») με το διάσημο ρεφρέν «Volare» («Να πετάς»), αποσπώντας επευφημίες στο στάδιο «Σαν Σίρο» του Μιλάνου.
Ο αντιπρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ Τζέι Ντι Βανς και ο υπουργός Εξωτερικών Μάρκο Ρούμπιο ήταν μεταξύ των παρευρισκομένων στο εμβληματικό ποδοσφαιρικό στάδιο. Ο Ιταλός πρόεδρος Σέρτζιο Ματαρέλα παρουσιάστηκε στο κοινό μέσω βίντεο, στο οποίο ο 84χρονος εμφανιζόταν να διασχίζει την πόλη με ένα από τα ιστορικά τραμ του Μιλάνου.
Τα πρώτα μέρη της τελετής περιλάμβαναν επίσης έναν φόρο τιμής στον εκλιπόντα Ιταλό σχεδιαστή μόδας Τζόρτζιο Αρμάνι, ο οποίος είχε ως βάση του το Μιλάνο και απεβίωσε τον περασμένο Σεπτέμβριο.

Η συνδιοργανώτρια Κορτίνα ντ’ Αμπέτσο είχε τον δικό της υποστηρικτικό ρόλο στους εορτασμούς, από απόσταση άνω των 400 χιλιομέτρων στα βουνά, σε ένα θέαμα με τίτλο «Armonia» («Αρμονία»), που αναμένεται να προσελκύσει τεράστιο παγκόσμιο τηλεοπτικό και διαδικτυακό κοινό. Στην Κορτίνα υπήρξε κάποια σύγχυση σχετικά με την πρόσβαση.
Για πρώτη φορά, δύο ολυμπιακοί βωμοί, ένα από τα σύμβολα των Αγώνων, θα ανάψουν ταυτόχρονα και θα παραμείνουν αναμμένοι καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια – ο ένας στην Αψίδα της Ειρήνης (Arco della Pace) στο Μιλάνο και ο άλλος στην Piazza Dibona της Κορτίνα.
Οι Αλμπέρτο Τόμπα και Ντέμπορα Κομπανιόνι, δύο από τους πιο επιτυχημένους Ιταλούς αλπικούς σκιέρ, φέρονται ως τα πρόσωπα που θα έχουν την τιμή να ανάψουν τους ολυμπιακούς βωμούς, ωστόσο τα ονόματα των συμμετεχόντων και η μορφή της τελετής δεν έχουν επισήμως ανακοινωθεί.
