Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said Greece was prepared to respond to any escalation with Turkey, while seeking to avoid moves that could lead to an uncontrolled crisis.
“We have all scenarios ready for any increase in pressure. We are ready to respond on the ground,” Gerapetritis told SKAI television. He said Greece’s strength lay not in rhetoric but in its diplomatic alliances, defence capabilities and economic resilience.
He said Greece would exercise its sovereign rights, including its right under international law to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles, at a time and in a manner it considers appropriate. Greece has already exercised the right in the Ionian Sea, he said, adding that there was no specific timetable for further moves.
Gerapetritis said Athens would maintain channels of communication with Ankara, stressing that dialogue and deterrence could go hand in hand. “We should never close the door to dialogue,” he said.
On the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection, he said the cable project would proceed according to the company’s schedule and Greece’s obligations as an EU member. He also said Athens had briefed EU institutions and member states on Turkey’s positions and could seek practical support if tensions escalated.
Greece would continue strengthening its defence and strategic ties with Israel, particularly in defence and technology, while maintaining close relations with Arab countries and its wider international partnerships, he said.
