Kimolos, one of the smallest islands in the Cyclades, is drawing increasing international attention, with British media describing it as a rare destination that has managed to stay largely untouched by mass tourism.
In a recent feature, The Observer highlights Kimolos as a place where visitors are still “a minority”, offering an experience far removed from the crowded hotspots of the Aegean.
Unlike more popular islands, Kimolos moves at a slower pace. Daily life continues much as it has for decades, with fishermen repairing their nets by the sea, locals gathering in village squares, and traditional routines shaping the rhythm of the island.
A key part of its charm lies in its authenticity. With no airport and limited ferry connections, the island remains relatively difficult to reach, a factor that has helped preserve its character and keep visitor numbers low.
The report also points to Kimolos’s distinctive natural landscape. Its name comes from “kimolia,” the Greek word for chalk, reflecting the island’s striking white rock formations that glow under the sun, a feature that once earned it the nickname “Argentiera,” or “the silvery island.”
Beyond its scenery, Kimolos is also emerging as a cultural destination. One of its most unique experiences is an open-air film festival, where screenings take place in remote coastal locations, often illuminated only by lanterns, an initiative driven largely by local volunteers.
At the same time, small-scale tourism is gradually developing. Carefully restored fishermen’s houses, boutique-style accommodations and a handful of family-run tavernas are shaping a model that prioritizes sustainability over mass development.
Despite this growing interest, the island’s identity remains intact. With a population of just over 800 residents and a strong sense of community, Kimolos continues to offer what many destinations have lost: a quieter, more authentic version of Greek summer.
As international attention grows, the challenge -as locals themselves acknowledge- will be to maintain that balance between visibility and preservation.
