Greece has issued a formal diplomatic demarche to Kyiv over a Ukrainian naval drone discovered off the island of Lefkada, citing serious concerns over maritime safety and the potential spillover of the Russia–Ukraine war into the Mediterranean.
The demarche was submitted on May 28–29 through the Ukrainian embassy in Athens and directly to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, according to Greece’s Foreign Ministry.
Spokesperson Lana Zochiou said Athens “expressed in the most formal way its protest” and is awaiting an official response from Ukraine, adding that further steps will be assessed once Kyiv replies.
Greece stressed that the presence of the unmanned vessel in territorial waters posed risks to navigation safety, the marine environment and human life, while also raising broader security concerns.
Athens reiterated its support for Ukraine but underlined that respect for international law, freedom of navigation and maritime safety are non-negotiable principles.
The incident dates back to May 7, when fishermen discovered the drone near Lefkada. Greek authorities later assessed it as a Ukrainian “kamikaze-type” naval drone carrying around 100kg of explosives, which was subsequently neutralised.
