Former deputy minister Christos Triantopoulos, former Thessaly governor Kostas Agorastos and three other officials have been referred to a Special Court over the alleged alteration of the site of the 2023 Tempi train disaster.
The case concerns the handling of the crash site after the February 2023 collision in central Greece, in which 57 people were killed. Prosecutors allege that the site was altered before all the victims had been recovered and evidence had been fully collected and preserved.
The judicial council of the Supreme Court ruled that Triantopoulos should stand trial for breach of duty, a misdemeanor, following a proposal by Supreme Court deputy prosecutor Dimitris Mitroulias.
The other three defendants are former Civil Protection Secretary General Vassilis Papageorgiou, former Larissa police chief Agapios Charakopoulos, who was in charge at the scene, and Evangelos Falaras, then head of the Fire Service.
Triantopoulos has denied the charge, saying he did not order the alteration of the accident site. Agorastos has also denied having any operational or coordinating responsibility for the site, saying the regional authority provided machinery and other support.
