Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis wrapped up the final cabinet meeting before the summer break with a call for hard work and "even more action", as well as a more "collective" presence in the media, government sources said on Thursday. The next cabinet meeting is scheduled for the end of August.
"You know that elections will be held in spring 2027. Until then, we have sufficient time to continue delivering results across all ministries. A longer period will be needed so that, first of all, we can all be briefed - especially Cabinet members, as well as the parliamentary group - on the full scope of the work being carried out. This is so that this can be explained to the public, with particular emphasis on local and regional projects that are now being completed or have already been completed, Mitsotakis said, addressing the members of the cabinet.
"There needs to be a greater and more intensive presence of ministers in the media - especially in regional media outlets - and I want to stress that ministers should not appear only to discuss their own portfolios, but should also defend the government’s overall work, on which they must be fully informed.
"We can - I do believe this - do even better, much better than the opinion polls suggest. We are the only ones with a plan. At the Thessaloniki International Fair - and this is extremely important - we will set out the first pillars of what we want to achieve by 2030," he said.
According to Mitsotakis, ministers need not fear political time as it was "working in our favour" and would serve to reveal the lack of substance of New Democracy's political opponents, while allowing the party to present its plan.
He concluded his remarks by reiterating that “ the time has come for even more action, within the framework of a collective political centre."
In earlier remarks to ministers, Mitsotakis outlined the government’s priorities, linking civil protection, road safety, water management and energy developments within a unified framework of reforms. He also expressed the government’s deep sorrow over the deaths of the firefighters who lost their lives battling wildfires, warned that August will be a particularly challenging month, and urged citizens to exercise maximum caution.
