A serious incident involving a Greek-managed ship, the Liberian-flagged dry bulk carrier 'Minoan Pioneer', was reported near the shores of Oman on Tuesday, during its passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the British maritime risk management firm Vanguard, the ship was hit by an unknown projectile, possibly a drone, which started a fire and forced the crew to abandon ship.
The same sources said that one seafarer, identified as the third engineer, was missing. Based on the latest information available, none of the crew are Greek sailors.
Vanguard said the projectile appears to have hit the engine room, while the fire also spread to the crew accommodation area.
The crew initially tried to contain the fire, seeking immediate assistance, but were eventually forced to abandon the vessel.
No further information was available regarding the extent of the damage or the condition of the rest of the crew.
'Minoan Pioneer' is managed by the Greek company Modion Maritime Management.
The competent authorities and maritime security services are closely monitoring the incident, while neither the origin of the projectile nor who was behind the attack has yet been clarified.
