Greek airline AEGEAN carried more than 2 million passengers in July for the first time in its history, as demand for domestic and international travel remained strong despite higher fuel costs and geopolitical uncertainty.
The carrier transported 2.011 million passengers during the month, marking a new monthly record, the company said on Thursday.
Passenger traffic increased by 5.3% year-on-year across both domestic and international operations. AEGEAN carried 886,000 passengers on its domestic network, which includes 66 routes to 32 destinations, while its international network served 1.125 million passengers across 154 routes to 108 destinations in 43 countries.
The company said the result came amid a challenging environment for airlines, with ongoing tensions in the Middle East affecting parts of its regional network and aviation fuel prices remaining elevated over recent months.
AEGEAN has continued to expand direct connections between regional destinations in Greece, with routes from Thessaloniki, Heraklion and Rhodes to smaller domestic airports helping meet seasonal demand from both Greek travellers and international visitors.
This summer, the airline operates 38 direct routes linking 24 destinations outside Athens, aiming to improve connectivity between Greek regions and support the distribution of tourism flows beyond the capital.
AEGEAN Deputy CEO Michael Kouveliotis said the company’s growth momentum continued in 2026 with the addition of seven Airbus A321neo aircraft to its fleet, despite higher operating costs and air traffic constraints across Europe and Greece.
"Growth is being driven primarily by the deployment of larger, more efficient aircraft with increased seating capacity, enhancing productivity while enabling us to operate within the infrastructure constraints of our network, especially at our main hub in Athens," Kouveliotis said.
The airline said the increased use of its A321neo fleet in July helped it carry 4% more passengers to and from Athens, while flight operations increased by only 1%.
AEGEAN said it was also investing in additional standby aircraft and crew to strengthen operational resilience, with reserve capacity this year at its highest level to date.
