On Wednesday, Hungary’s incoming prime minister, Péter Magyar, called for the resignation of the country’s president, Tamás Sulyok.
Magyar met today with President Sulyok to discuss the process of forming a new government, following the sweeping victory of his Tisza party on Sunday against the Fidesz party of Viktor Orbán.
After the meeting, the incoming prime minister stated that he had asked President Sulyok to voluntarily step down from his post, noting that he would prefer a president who embodies national unity.
Magyar added that if Sulyok does not resign voluntarily, the new government will use its mandate to amend the Constitution.
According to Magyar, President Sulyok responded that he would “consider” his arguments.
The leader of the Tisza party also said that President Sulyok informed him about the timeline for the new parliament to assume its duties and that he will be given the mandate to form a government, adding that the president also believes the change of government should happen as quickly as possible.
Magyar also noted that he will begin informal talks with the European Commission even before the new government is formed, stressing that time is running out for Hungary to avoid losing EU funds that have been frozen due to the backsliding of the rule of law under Orbán.
Finally, he emphasized that the new government is expected to be sworn in in mid-May, possibly even slightly earlier.
