An explosion followed by a large fire broke out on Monday at a vinegar production and packaging factory in Examilia, in the Corinth region of southern Greece, leaving a 25-year-old worker dead, authorities said.
The worker was found dead by firefighters after the blast caused a major fire that almost completely destroyed the industrial facility. Four other employees who were inside the plant at the time of the explosion were reported to be safe, while initial reports said that three people were taken to Corinth Hospital with breathing difficulties.
Corinth Mayor Nikolaos Stavrelis said the explosion was heard from at least 15 kilometres away, causing alarm among residents in the wider area.
“Unfortunately, the explosion caused a fire at the plant, resulting in the death of a 25-year-old worker, while the other employees who were inside at the time are safe,” Stavrelis said.
Emergency crews responded immediately, with 32 firefighters, 10 vehicles and a search-and-rescue unit deployed to the scene. Firefighting efforts were supported by water tankers from the Corinth municipality, while EKAB emergency medical teams also attended with three ambulances.
The mayor said the damage to the facility was extensive, with the plant suffering almost total destruction due to the fire.
The Fire Service’s investigation unit in Corinth has been activated to determine the cause of the explosion and the subsequent blaze.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the circumstances that led to the incident.
